“Business is the ultimate sport. In business, as in sport, the only thing you can control is effort.” — Mark Cuban What’s one weakness I have? Giving up control in my business. I find it hard to delegate. I always want to do everything myself. I know I can’t always, but I still try. I find it hard to assign a project to another partner when I could do it — even though I do sometimes, but only when I really really REALLY have to. Not because I don’t know talented people. Not because I don’t trust or believe in the skills of others.
But I just find it hard to let go, when it comes to my work. I’m a firm believer in the phrase “if you want something done right, do it yourself.” And I have a particular way of doing things. A particular way of completing projects, tracking my time, etc. But as entrepreneurs, we know that’s not the way it can always go. Sometimes we just don’t have the time, or even the expertise in a certain area. Sometimes we’re just stretched too thin. Sometimes we have a lot more pressing things to do. So we have to. At some point, we have to let go. We have to let someone else pick up our slack. After all I am in the business of professional business support services. I know many busy professionals/entrepreneurs/small business owners face this internal conflict. And I know in order to grow, both personally and professionally, this is something I have to learn to overcome. As a freelance consultant, who operates on having busy professionals from all over the world trust me with handling their projects, I should of course do the same and trust others when I need the help. Trust that their way is also the right way, even if it may not be my way. I’m continuously learning, about business, about marketing, about technology, etc., and these are all things I can read about, take courses on, learn, learn, and learn some more. But one of the hardest things to learn to do is changing our personal ‘set in my ways’ habits. It is possible but oh so hard. There’s no reading, or course you can take that automatically expands your knowledge and capability to do this. It’s all internal. So as I’m learning, and reading, and experiencing, and growing, this is something I have to look within myself and do. Learn to let go. Learn to give up control. It’s a process, but I will get there. And when I do, I believe that is when I become truly powerful and in control. Personally and professionally.
